…Interior design is not just about making things look pretty. It is about expression! Whether it is a bathroom or a living room, a garden or a balcony; every space deserves to be designed in order to maximize its potential and create an environment that brings joy to it’s occupants. At HLS Design we understand this and we use this as a starting point for every interior we create.
Here are a few tips in creating an interior which makes you smile from ear to ear.
Confidence is key to creating an interior which truly reflects you and makes you happy. Because design is an expression of our own personal style, every home is going to be different. You can push this as far as you like but make sure you are confident when doing so. This will help you avoid feeling vulnerable when guests come over because you will be confident with what you have done! If you pick a theme or a colour, just go for it and be brave!

You need a clear vision for your interior or the space can feel a little disjointed and random. Even if your aim is to create an eclectic style, that is still a style, so get on pinterest, Houzz or google to help refine the look you want to achieve. Clarity is also important when hiring contractors because you will need to know what is and isn’t included in their quote.

Always know your budget before starting any project! Have a look at various products to help you build an idea of what you can afford and/ or what you need to save in order to execute your design. You may wish to invest more into items which will are used frequently so you can be confident they will withstand the test of time.

Every good designer will create a plan for what needs doing and when. It is important that things are done in the right order to save doing things twice or paying over the odds because you didn’t think about it before. If you are having electrics done, this will need doing before the decorator. If you are having ready-made furniture delivered, make sure you have the access ready for delivery. Some contractors may also charge extra for lost time if there are delays in the schedule so planning is an extremely important step in keeping costs down as much as possible.

This may sound like an extremely obvious step for a design project, but you would be surprised how many people do not take action. I often see people start, but never finish their projects! Paintings bought for a room with the ‘intention’ of putting it up one day and it never goes up. Fabric which never gets used. Design is in the detail and execution.
